About the Role

Expatriate Tax Opportunity at BDO UK

BDO UK is a leading accountancy and business advisory firm, helping organisations respond to change with confidence through expert advice, practical solutions, and trusted relationships.

Our clients are some of the UK’s most ambitious businesses — from fast-growing entrepreneurial ventures to large multinational organisations. They are the driving force behind the economy, and we are proud to support the owners and leadership teams behind their success.

Why Join BDO?

At BDO, you’ll be part of a business that values ideas, people, and trust. Joining our Tax team means stepping into a fast-moving, intellectually stimulating environment where no two days are the same.

Tax is constantly evolving, shaped by legislative change, global mobility, and shifting business needs. That means you’ll be exposed to a wide variety of challenges and opportunities, with the freedom and support to develop your career in a direction that suits your ambitions.

What you can expect

  • Varied and meaningful work across multiple sectors and business types

  • Exposure to complex tax matters and specialist advisory projects

  • Collaboration with experts across BDO UK and the wider global network

  • Career progression opportunities supported by structured development

  • Autonomy and trust to take ownership of your work and growth

About the Team

This role sits within BDO’s Expatriate Tax team, part of our wider Global Employer Services offering. This broader team also includes:

  • Employment Tax

  • Share Plans and Incentives

  • Strategic Reward Advisory

Our Expatriate Tax specialists support corporate clients with internationally mobile employees and international remote workers, both in the UK and globally. We work closely with other teams across BDO and with colleagues throughout our international network to deliver joined-up, commercially focused solutions.

This is a team that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and personal service. As client needs evolve and regulations shift, there is always something new to learn, solve, and improve.

The Role

As part of the Expatriate Tax team, you will provide both tax compliance and advisory services to a broad portfolio of clients. You’ll work closely with Managers, Senior Managers, Directors, and Partners, while also helping to support and develop junior colleagues.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys a role that combines technical tax expertise, client relationship management, commercial awareness, and team collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expatriate tax compliance and advisory services to a diverse client base

  • Manage a portfolio of clients alongside a Manager or Senior Manager

  • Oversee billing and cash collection, while identifying ways to improve recoveries

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and tailor your communication style to different audiences

  • Identify potential risks in line with the firm’s quality control procedures and escalate appropriately

  • Contribute to ad hoc and special assignments as required

  • Support, guide, and supervise junior team members

  • Train, mentor, and advise colleagues within your team and across the wider firm

  • Champion change and challenge existing practices to improve efficiency and service delivery

  • Take ownership of your professional development through continuous learning and education

  • Take personal responsibility for your decisions, actions, and contribution to the team

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a candidate with strong technical tax knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the confidence to manage client relationships effectively.

Essential experience and qualifications

  • Degree educated and/or CTA, ACA qualified, or equivalent

  • Demonstrable post-qualified experience in tax

  • Up-to-date and in-depth tax knowledge, with the ability to handle complex tax matters

  • Experience in project and staff management

  • Ability to manage a substantial client portfolio profitably

  • A track record of identifying opportunities to win new clients and grow existing relationships

  • Experience dealing with senior client stakeholders and management teams

Technical Knowledge Required

Candidates should be able to demonstrate competence at tax assistant level or above, including practical knowledge of:

  • Tax returns and associated computations

  • Preparing written tax advice for clients

  • Tax arrival and departure briefings

  • Expatriate tax technical issues, including:

  • UK residency matters

  • Expatriate tax concessions

  • Taxation of earned income

  • Producing work to an excellent written standard

  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills

The Kind of Person You’ll Be

You’ll be proactive, collaborative, and motivated to make an impact. You should be comfortable managing your own workload while also working closely with others across different levels of the business.

We are looking for someone who can combine technical capability with sound judgement, commercial awareness, and a commitment to delivering high-quality client service.

You will likely be someone who:

  • Works well independently and as part of a team

  • Communicates clearly and confidently with a range of stakeholders

  • Builds trusted relationships internally and externally

  • Is committed to ongoing learning and self-development

  • Supports and develops others generously

  • Looks for ways to improve processes and challenge the status quo

  • Acts with accountability, integrity, and professionalism

We are committed to helping our people achieve both their professional ambitions and personal goals. At BDO, career development is not left to chance — we provide the structure, support, and opportunities you need to grow with confidence.

You’ll benefit from:
