We are seeking a Senior Manager, Direct Tax to join our UK-based Europe Tax Centre of Expertise. The Opportunity

As Senior Manager, Direct Tax, you will play a central role in shaping tax compliance and strategy across Europe, with a particular focus on Germany. You will work closely with senior finance leaders, business stakeholders, and specialist tax colleagues to ensure compliance, manage risk, and support wider business priorities.

This position offers the chance to lead high-profile tax activity, gain cross-border exposure, and strengthen your reputation as a trusted adviser in an increasingly complex international environment.


What You’ll Be Responsible For

Tax Audits and Strategic Oversight

  • Lead and coordinate tax audits in partnership with local finance teams and the corporate tax function

  • Define audit plans, manage information requests, align key stakeholders, and drive matters through to resolution

Risk Management and Governance

  • Act as the German Tax Compliance Management System Officer

  • Build and maintain a comprehensive tax risk register

  • Gather insights from payroll, indirect tax, and other internal teams

  • Present quarterly findings to the Finance Director and General Manager, giving you direct exposure to senior leadership

Direct Tax Compliance

  • Oversee end-to-end tax compliance for Germany and selected European markets

  • Manage both internal and external resources to ensure tax filings are accurate, timely, and well controlled

  • Ensure compliance activity is not only completed, but delivered with a strong strategic mindset

Global and Cross-Border Tax Support

  • Support US GAAP tax provision, forecasting, and contingency reporting

  • Contribute to transfer pricing documentation

  • Align global tax requirements with local German regulations

  • Help connect international obligations in a way that is both compliant and commercially effective

Business Partnering

  • Serve as a trusted adviser to the Head of Finance and other local market stakeholders

  • Provide practical guidance on operational tax matters

  • Keep colleagues informed of relevant legislative and regulatory changes

  • Build strong working relationships across:

  • Tax

  • Finance

  • Legal

  • Treasury

  • HR

  • Customs

  • External advisers

Process Improvement and Technology

  • Use technology and smarter calculation methods to improve the efficiency and quality of tax returns and provisions

  • Support the ongoing modernisation of the tax function

Leadership and Team Development

  • Coach and develop junior team members

  • Foster an inclusive, accountable, and collaborative team culture

  • Encourage contribution from all colleagues and create an environment where every voice is heard

Budget and Resource Management

  • Manage budgets strategically

  • Plan internal resourcing effectively

  • Maximise in-house knowledge retention

  • Ensure external adviser costs are transparent, justified, and well controlled


What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a confident and collaborative tax professional who combines strong technical expertise with leadership capability and commercial awareness.

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • A relevant degree and/or chartered tax adviser qualification

  • Strong experience within a large corporate tax environment, either in-house or within advisory

  • Experience working as part of a global or regional tax team

  • A proven ability to manage, coach, and develop people

  • Strong understanding of:

  • Tax accounting provisions

  • Audit requirements

  • Financial statement disclosures

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with US GAAP

  • Experience with Germany-related tax matters, whether in-house, in advisory, or through work involving German entities

  • German language skills are beneficial, but not essential

Personal Attributes

  • Able to balance strategic thinking with strong attention to detail

  • Comfortable working through ambiguity, multiple priorities, and international complexity

  • Collaborative and inclusive in leadership style

  • Proactive in bringing quieter voices into the conversation and building strong team dynamics


Working Pattern

This role is classified as site-by-design, meaning it follows a hybrid working model with at least 50% of time onsite at your assigned BMS office. Onsite presence is considered an important part of collaboration, innovation, productivity, and company culture.
