The Opportunity
Working closely with the Head of Tax, you will support and manage a broad range of tax matters across Chaucer’s syndicates and corporate entities.
This is a varied and visible role that covers:
Group tax reporting
Tax compliance
Transfer pricing
International tax matters
Process improvement and transformation projects
Ad-hoc tax advisory support across the business
You will be part of a collaborative finance environment, contributing both technical expertise and practical solutions to ensure Chaucer’s tax operations remain robust, compliant, and forward-looking.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for a broad mix of technical, operational, and project-based work, including:
Managing the tax element of Chaucer’s group reporting process, working closely with finance teams and other stakeholders
Overseeing tax compliance for both UK and overseas entities in partnership with external tax advisers
Supporting the preparation and maintenance of transfer pricing local files across multiple jurisdictions
Contributing proactively to business transformation initiatives, identifying and improving tax-related processes within finance and across the wider business
Using technology and tools where available to improve efficiency and control
Maintaining and strengthening internal controls, ensuring alignment with Chaucer’s tax strategy and risk framework
Providing tax support to other business areas, assisting the Head of Tax with technical guidance and practical advice when required
Regulatory Responsibilities
This role includes direct involvement in key regulatory obligations, particularly:
Tax return filings with HMRC
Tax filings with overseas tax authorities
What We’re Looking For
Essential Experience
We are looking for a tax professional who brings strong technical knowledge and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment.
Good knowledge of UK corporation tax
Strong understanding of tax accounting principles, including:
Financial statement tax disclosures
Deferred tax calculations
Experience assessing and implementing controls and procedures
Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment
Desirable Experience
The following experience would be advantageous, though not essential:
Exposure to the Lloyd’s and/or general insurance sector in a tax or finance capacity
Familiarity with OECD transfer pricing guidelines
Knowledge of Pillar Two
Experience with VAT returns in the insurance sector
Understanding of the Partial Exemption Special Method regime
Knowledge of cross-border VAT issues
Exposure to international tax matters, including:
Double tax treaties
Certificates of residence
Experience working with company expense and ledger systems
Technical Skills
To succeed in this role, you should be confident working with data, reporting, and analysis tools.
Excel – essential
PowerBI – desirable
Strong analytical capability
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to present information clearly through reports and business updates
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will hold one of the following professional accountancy qualifications:
ACA – essential
ACCA – essential
CTA – desirable
