About the Role
HMRC Compliance Caseworker
Join HMRC in a role that makes a direct contribution to the UK’s public services. As a Compliance Caseworker, you will help ensure the correct amount of tax is collected, supporting the funding of schools, hospitals, and other essential services across the country.
About the Role
This is a responsible and investigative position where you will examine compliance cases, identify risks, and take appropriate action when offences against the tax system are suspected. Your work will be central to protecting public revenue and maintaining confidence in the tax system.
No two days are the same. You may be speaking with customers over the phone, drafting written correspondence, arranging and leading meetings, reviewing evidence, analysing complex information, or making well-reasoned decisions based on the facts of a case. Some cases may also require visits to business premises.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Compliance Caseworker, you will take ownership of a varied caseload and work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to bring cases to a conclusion.
Managing a portfolio of compliance cases from start to finish
Gathering and reviewing information from a range of sources
Assessing risks and determining the most appropriate next steps
Communicating with customers and their representatives by phone, letter, and in meetings
Carrying out interventions, including visits to business premises where required
Making decisions based on evidence and recording them accurately
Working closely with colleagues and stakeholders to resolve issues effectively
Supporting improvements in processes and ways of working
What the Work Involves
This position offers a mix of investigative, analytical, and customer-facing responsibilities. You will be expected to use sound judgement, handle sensitive situations professionally, and make decisions that are fair, evidence-based, and clearly documented.
You will regularly deal with complex and sometimes challenging conversations, so the ability to remain calm, professional, and confident is essential. You will also need to explain technical information clearly, ensuring customers understand what is required and why.
Skills and Qualities We’re Looking For
To succeed in this role, you should be able to combine strong communication skills with organisation, resilience, and sound decision-making.
Clear and confident communication, both written and verbal
The ability to handle difficult conversations with professionalism and tact
Strong analytical skills to assess information and identify risks
Good judgement when making evidence-based decisions
Organisation and time management to handle your workload effectively
Resilience when managing challenging or sensitive situations
The ability to explain technical matters in a way customers can understand
A collaborative approach to working with colleagues and stakeholders
Why This Role Stands Out
This is a challenging yet highly rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys investigative work, problem-solving, and making a meaningful impact. You’ll gain valuable experience, develop specialist compliance knowledge, and build a strong foundation for a long-term career within HMRC.
If you are looking for a role that offers variety, responsibility, and the chance to contribute to something bigger, a career as a Compliance Caseworker could be the perfect next step.
